Asheville to get First Downtown Marathon

The 13-year-old Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon will expand to include a full marathon in September 2013, bringing in thousands of runners and spectators and an impressive boost to the economy, race director Greg Duff announced Monday.“This will be a national race,” Duff said. “Asheville is a destination, and you throw in a marathon, and you have a destination experience.”
The total field is expected to be 8,000 runners, with a cap of 6,500 half- and full-marathon runners, and 1,500 runners in the 5K event.

Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission (ABRSC) and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) jointly announced today that Mission Foundation will sponsor the Friends of Mission Charity Classic, a new tournament on the 2013 Symetra Tour — Road to the LPGA. It will be held from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19, at the Country Club of Asheville in Asheville, NC. The Friends of Mission Charity Classic will feature a field of professional women golfers from around the world competing for a total purse of $100,000.
UNC Asheville, in conjunction with the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, corporate partners and civic and community leaders, have announced today that they have submitted a bid to host the 2013-15 Big South Conference men's and women's basketball championships at Kimmel Arena in the Wilma Sherrill Center.
